Sub-companies of Yeniseyneft and Tatneft plan to build two oil terminals inside the city boundary. Citizens of Svetly city have been staging protests against the project for two years. They claim the projects are not environmentally safe. Ecodefence! group and other environmental organizations arranged a referendum this spring. The referendum was declared invalid, as less than 50% of voters participated in it.
According to the regional authorities, oil terminals construction in the city is a serious issue. Therefore they ruled to suspend the construction until a comprehensive environmental impact study of the project is conducted.
