Joint Letter – CSOs call on Commissioner Jørgensen to implement more stringent rules for ‘blue hydrogen’ based on fossil gas

Publish date: December 19, 2024

More stringent rules for ‘blue hydrogen’ based on fossil gas in the low-carbon fuels delegated act are needed to ensure a level playing field for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin.

Bellona, together with a coalition of civil society organisations (CSOs), has co-signed a letter addressed to Energy Commissioner Jørgensen, calling for stricter rules on ‘blue hydrogen.’ The undersigned organisations support the Commission’s efforts to scale up green hydrogen production for hard-to-abate sectors, including financial support through European Hydrogen Bank auctions and the finalisation of the regulatory framework.

As a coalition of CSOs, we want to highlight our concerns about the proposal that the previous Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson submitted for public consultation. Our concern in this letter focuses exclusively on the treatment of so-called ‘blue hydrogen,’ which involves steam methane reforming of fossil gas combined with Carbon Capture and Storage.

Polish EU Presidency: What does it mean for climate action?

While the Polish Presidency presents an opportunity to address critical challenges, its current priorities fall short of aligning European competitiveness and security with the urgent need for climate action. Bellona’s Roadmap for 2024-2029 calls on the EU to implement ambitious and science-based climate goals to achieve climate neutrality and strengthen EU security. By focusing on industrial decarbonisation, renewable energy integration, transparent climate policy, and green public procurement, the Presidency can lead the EU towards a resilient, competitive, and climate-neutral future. As such, Bellona calls on Poland to implement more concrete and ambitious climate policies and well-functioning markets for a net-zero world.
