Workshop – From bioresources to bioeconomy: Building a low-carbon future for feed in the EU
Feed production is a key component of a circular, regenerative and competitive bioeconomy. Nonetheless, the sector’s high-volume consumption places substantial pressure on resources and land, making it a critical area for efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve resources efficiency, and ensure biomass is used where it delivers the greatest value.
Despite challenges such as animal disease outbreaks, climate-induced fluctuations, and economic uncertainty, global feed production increased in 2024, with Europe recording a 2.7% growth. These trends underscore the urgency of improving resource use and reducing the sector’s carbon footprint, while also exploring opportunities to increase sustainable feed production within Europe. The upcoming update of the EU Bioeconomy Strategy therefore provides a timely opportunity to define how the feed sector can contribute more effectively to a resource-efficient, low-carbon future.
The half-day workshop will feature a keynote, case study presentations, panel session, and a breakout session on policy gaps and recommendations, concluding with a networking reception.
