Call for Evidence and Consultation Response: Energy Security Check

Bellona welcomes the Commission’s decision to carry out an assessment of the EU’s energy security architecture and the opportunity to provide feedback. The fitness check includes the Gas Security of Supply Regulation (EU) 2017/1938 and the Electricity Risk Preparedness Regulation (EU) 2019/941 as key pillars.

We emphasise that energy security and climate action must go hand in hand.  Tackling climate change through emissions reductions and renewable energy integration is essential for building a resilient and sustainable energy systems.

Key priorities for action include

  • Expanding renewable energy deployment to reduce dependence on imported fuels
  • Strengthening grid infrastructure to ensure stability and enable cross-border cooperation
  • Develop a more integrated energy system that enhances flexibility and resilience in crises

Finally, we advocate a framework that address the dual challenges of energy security and climate challenges, reducing emissions into the atmosphere while ensuring energy security for all Member states.
