Renewables and Efficiency: Building up Europe’s Energy Future

Bellona Europa welcomes the update of the renewable energy framework as a critical tool to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy sources (RES) in line with the European Climate Law’s 2040 target of a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

In the current political context, it is more urgent than ever to strengthen the enabling conditions for rapid RES deployment, while advancing energy efficiency, system integration, and electrification across demand sectors. High climate ambition must remain the baseline throughout this process.

This paper sets out Bellona Europa’s key recommendations for the design of the updated framework.

Bellona Europa also welcomes the initiative to establish the post-2030 framework for the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED), recognising it as a central pillar of EU energy policy. This section outlines the core principles that should guide its design and support the transition towards climate neutrality.
