Joint letter on the Reform of the European Concrete Standard EN 206

Publish date: July 1, 2026

In July 2026, a coalition of industry organisations, researchers, and clean technology stakeholders issued a joint letter to the European Commission calling for reform of the European concrete standard EN 206. The letter argues that a harmonised, performance-based standard is essential to enable the widespread adoption of low-carbon concrete across the EU. It highlights that current national variations in EN 206 create barriers to market access for innovative low-carbon cement and concrete technologies, despite growing policy support through the Industrial Accelerator Act. The signatories urge the Commission to align EN 206 with upcoming low-carbon procurement requirements, ensuring that European producers can compete within a unified single market and accelerate the decarbonisation of the construction sector.
