Joint Letter: Making Electrification the Engine of Europe’s Competitiveness and Security

Publish date: October 28, 2026

Ahead of Thursday’s meeting of energy ministers, we and 16 other organisations from the EU Innovation Hub joined forces to call for ambitious renewable energy and energy efficiency targets to be at the heart of Europe’s decarbonisation.

Replacing imported oil and gas with European, fossil-free renewable electricity would be a win-win-win situation. This would make energy more affordable, shield us from price spikes and geopolitical pressure, and secure a stable climate in the long term.

We welcome the Commission’s 2040 goal of doubling electrification to 46% of final energy. To that end, we urge to:

  • Keep electrification, renewables and efficiency as mutually reinforcing and binding pillars. The post-2030 framework should preserve the Renewable Energy (RED) and Energy Efficiency (EED) Directives and set ambitious, binding targets for 2040.
  • Back the 2040 electrification objective with a robust delivery framework – including a clear methodology, sectoral benchmarks for industry, households and transport, and KPIs.
  • Fix the economics of electrification, reducing both upfront costs as well as improving the economic case, including delivering on an electricity-to-gas price ratio of 2 for industry and 2.5 for households.

Read the full letter and annex to see how the post-2030 framework can deliver an efficient, renewable and electrified Europe.
