Bellona Europa Job Opening: Manager Nordics, Industrial Decarbonisation

Job category: Full-time

Job location: Brussels / Belgium (hybrid with link to Nordics a possibility, please specify in application)

Expiration date: 20 April 2024 (Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, we encourage applicants to submit as soon as possible)

Achieving climate neutrality in the EU by 2050 requires radical cuts in emissions in every sector of the economy, underpinned by a transformation of the energy system. This transformation will entail the decarbonisation of power generation, the massive ramp-up of the deployment of renewables and grid infrastructure, the electrification of end-uses and decarbonisation of heavy industry with accompanying crucial CO2 transport and storage infrastructure, among other efforts. No one country can achieve this alone, and to ramp up and coordinate our efforts in the Nordics, with a particular focus on Denmark and Sweden, Bellona is looking for a Manager to work in particular on industrial decarbonisation.

As an environmental organisation, Bellona Europa has always been at the forefront of environmental innovation and industrial decarbonisation. Being a group of evidence-based environmentalists, our goal is to implement new, more sustainable actions to rapidly reduce manmade climate breakdown. We advocate for pragmatic approaches that deliver the greatest impact, today and tomorrow. As a watchdog against greenwashing, unafraid to address contentious issues, we also endeavour to cooperate with all stakeholders interested and serious in delivering immediate climate action.

From our Oslo, Brussels, and more recently, Berlin, and Vilnius offices, we have been advocating for transformative climate action for decades. We are now looking to strengthen and better coordinate our work across the Nordics with a particular focus on EU decarbonisation efforts.

Bellona Europa is currently seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual to join our team as a Manager to accelerate our work in the Nordics with the clear aim of linking this closer to our EU advocacy efforts. The position would ideally be located in Brussels, Belgium but there is some flexibility for hybrid solutions linked to the Nordics. The position will focus in particular on Denmark and Sweden, with a more limited focus on Finland and Iceland. Coordination and collaboration with our Norwegian office will be crucial. The candidate will seek to optimise synergies between Bellona’s EU and Nordic work for coordinated decarbonisation with a particular focus on industrial decarbonisation. As part of the work, the candidate will be responsible for strengthening and seeking to expand Bellona’s relationships with Nordic stakeholders and its Nordic presence, as well as linking such efforts to ongoing EU policy discussions and advocacy. This will include national efforts in the Nordics as well as capitalising on such efforts in a EU policy context in Brussels with relevant stakeholders.

Requirements

  • A postgraduate degree in a relevant field with a focus on energy, climate, economics, politics or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management and/or meeting set deliverables within set timeframe.
  • Relevant experience in policy/advocacy, with a particular knowledge of political realities and circumstances in the Nordics a clear advantage
  • Understanding of challenges and opportunities in the fight against climate change with a particular focus on industrial decarbonisation
  • Professional experience of 5+ years with a proven track record of delivering high-quality results an advantage

  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex information to diverse audiences in a clear and compelling manner. Additional languages, in particular a Nordic language given the geographical focus of the position is a clear advantage.

  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams, forging partnerships and building relationships with stakeholders from academia, government, industry, and civil society.
  • Eligibility to work and reside in Belgium/in the EU (Bellona is unable to sponsor work visa).

These criteria are meant to be indicative not prescriptive. We encourage applications from candidates who have similar qualifications, even if they do not fulfil all the above criteria.
