Open letter asking for MEPs to vote for an EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) that work for the climate and support industrial transformation

Publish date: June 3, 2022

Together with other NGOs, Bellona Europa signed an open letter asking the Members of the European Parliament for three key points in upcoming votes on the ETS revision and the CBAM proposal on 7 June 2022:

  1. Vote for higher climate ambition by reducing ETS emissions by 68%
  2. Phase-out free allowances by 2030 at the latest and implement a CBAM only as an alternative to current carbon leakage protection measures
  3. A strong revision of the current benchmarks as well as stricter conditionality for companies that wish to keep receiving free allowances
