Joint Letter: Recommendations for an Environmentally Ambitious Construction Products Regulation (CPR)

Bellona signed a joint letter, alongside 22 stakeholders, calling EU Member States for ambitious environmental provisions on the Construction Products Regulation. Construction products represent some of the highest energy and carbon intensive products on the EU market, averaging to a carbon footprint of 250 million tonnes every year. In addition to CO2 emissions, construction products require 1.6 billion tonnes of raw materials, representing half of the EU’s consumption, and at end of life a third of EU’s waste generated annually.

Overall, the target setting in the EU is an example that other regions of the world should follow in terms of creating demand for hydrogen in the right sectors, while backing it up with the renewable generation deployment to meet the demand from the electrolysers. However, the supportive landscape that could ensure targets are met is largely missing, leaving the EU strategy towards hydrogen use ambiguous and thus less effective.
